Our MIssion

The Akerson Family Foundation seeks to increase access to higher education for first-generation college students. To accomplish this goal, the Foundation has launched a scholarship program offering up to $40,000 per student in renewable four-year college scholarships.

Education has the power to transform a life.
— Daniel Akerson, Chairman of the Akerson Family Foundation

What We Do

  • Each Akerson Family Foundation Scholarship is a renewable, four-year scholarship worth up to $40,000 over a student’s college career.

  • Recipients must be first-generation college students with demonstrated academic achievement, financial need, and school/community engagement.

  • Eligible high school seniors are invited to submit a scholarship application to the Akerson Family Foundation by March 1st. Based on those applications and subsequent interviews, the Foundation will then choose a select group of students to receive a renewable, four-year scholarship to attend the college/university of their choice.

  • The Foundation will only be accepting scholarship applications from seniors currently enrolled in the Virginia public school systems of Alexandria City Public Schools, Arlington Public Schools, and Fairfax County Public Schools. Please read our applicant criteria here to see if you are eligible to apply.

  • Applications for the current school year will be released on October 1st (please see the “NEWS” section of our website for the most current application release date information). If you have any questions, please email us at contact @ affscholars.org
